I guess Happy Holidays is the more general and inclusive one.

I would not be offended though to say Merry Christmas to someone who is a Christian. And if they told me Merry Christmas that's OK with me.

It does not bother me to say Merry Christmas, but I usually say Happy Holidays anyway.

Since I'm not christian, I prefer Happy Holidays. But if someone greets me with Merry Christmas, I'm not offended. I appreciate the spirit of their wish.

Since the "holiday" in question here is CHRISTMAS , it would be nice if everyone said Merry Christmas.
Yes, even the non-Christians in deference to the 95% of Americans who claim to be Christians.
