You both combine like terms and then multiply by its reciprocal in both sides. Before doing that, you must find the LCD of -3/11b and 8/22b.

-3/11b + 8/22b =5/11
-6/22b + 8/22b = 5/11
(11)1/11b = 5/11(11)
b=5

-3/11b + 8/22b =5/11
-6/22b +8/22b = 10/22
2/22b =10/22
1/11b = 5/11 -->b=1/5

-6/22b + 8/22b = 10/22,so 1/11b = 10/22 and thus 110b = 22, so b = 1/ 5

2007-12-06 12:24:03 · answer #4 · answered by Anonymous · 0 1

-3/11b + 8/22b =5/11
-3/11b + 4/11b =5/11
1/11b=5/11
multiply both sides by 11
b=5

Wait:
Are you asking...
(-3/11)b+(8/22)b=5/11

Which would be:
Multiply both sides by 22 to get
-6b+8b=10
2b=10
divide both sides by 2
b=10/2=5

Or are you asking...
-3/(11b) + 8/(22b) =5/11
Multiply both sides by 22b to get
-6+8=10b
10b=2
divide both sides by 10
b=2/10=1/5

use 22b as the common denominator

-6+8=10b
2=10b
1/5=b

add -3/11 and 8/22...which is 1/11...then add the B....so then it's...

1/11b=5/11...

divide1/11 on both sides....or in this case..."when it's fractions you divide, flip the second over, and MULTIPLY"

so inststead of 5/11 divided by 1/11...just do
5/11 x 11/1...and then multiply across....
and it comes out to be....

b=5
