The Buddha (meaning "the enightened one") lived and was enlightened in India.

Buddhism spread around India and surounding countries. Countries with particularly strong Buddhist influence were (at one point) China, Japan, Tibet (when it was a country, before the Communist Chinese invasion), Mongolia (including the part that is now a part of China), Sikkim, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, the mountainous parts of Nepal, Thailand, and all of the Southeast Asian countries (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Burma). I'm sure I'm missing some, but those are the most important ones, anyway.

Buddhism started in India. It spread to China, Japan, Nepal, Tibet, Indonesia, Burma, Afghanistan and other countries in Central Asia. Many of these countries became Muslim by force through violent invasions. Tibet became a center of Buddhism after one of its rulers was converted. Perhaps, because of its remoteness it was protected from Muslim invaders.

Unfortunately, China has taken over Tibet today and has destroyed many monasteries and imprisoned or killed many monks and nuns.

Today, Tibetan Buddhists have carried Buddhism to all the Western nations where they have taken refuge.
