gravity has always been known to exist. Newton formulated the laws defining how it acts and Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity explained a lot of the why's, including mass's ability to "warp" space.

The first person to actually suggest space was curved due to gravity was Einstein.
In his work from 1905, he predicted that space itself would be curved due to a gravitational source. Some years later (1911? 1913?) there was a total eclipse of the sun in.... Africa, I believe. According to his theory, a star that was actually *behind* the sun should be visible to people on Earth during the eclipse.
When the eclipse happened, the star was indeed visible - proving the theory of gravitational effects on space.

Nobody.
However, Einstein introduced the idea that spacetime is CURVED. Physicists talk about the curvature of space, not the "warpature".
