Lighting. Landscape lighting not only highlights your plants and trees, but is a deterrent for thieves as well. And contrary to a earlier answer, a dog is a good deterrent as well, the louder the better, size doesn't matter much if a dog is loud.

Locks and security systems are made to keep the good guys out. If you want better security, hire a guard and pray he doesn't fall asleep. Being dead honest.
Even attack dogs won't deter a good criminal mind. They have methods but a good deterrent.

12 guage would work well if you caught them in the process.

Signs, and simple things are good deterrents, like "no trespassing' etc.

1. Install a good alarm system. 2. Think of keeping a dog. 3. A personal alarm system. 4. Properly secure doors and windows. 5. Keep pepper spray etc. for self deffense. 6. Let your aunt stay with "Buzzzbe". She is willing to take care of your aunt and she in fact is in need of an aunt. Among all the answers " Buzzzbe " has given the best solution and she should earn points for that.

Large muddy boots in front of door. move valuable Items from site of window. when ever you buy a new appliance or expensive electronic toy cut box into small pieces and put them in garbage bag never put them in front of the house it's like advertising .if single ++++++++ park nice vehical at garare storage for trips use older vehical to work or access other vehical . kind of out of the way but if you get thru life with out getting riped off it's worth it.

Act crazy...I mean off your rocker...trust me ain't nobody breaking into "the crazy ladies" house!

Also,not having anything of value in the house...can't take what you don't have and if they do take something that's cheap...it's easily replaceable.
