The Equator runs through the country of Colombia. It is located roughly between 5°S and 10°N of the Equator.

The Tropic of Cancer (23.5°) runs through the Sahara Desert. The desert is located approximately between 10°N and 30°N

Knowing this, then the coffee growers are much closer to the Equator. The Tuareg, the nomads of the Sahara moved their caravans throughout north Africa - closer to the Tropic of Cancer.

Columbia. The equator passes not far south of there. The sahara is about on par with the US South, and maybe the Carribean, still north of Columbia.
