We have scheduled blackouts here too, you must live in an apartment or a condo.

Well, 10 pm is my bedtime, so I say, go to sleep! =)

Firefox is completely safe and I recommend any browser other than Internet Explorer. (so as long as you use firefox/opera/chrome/safari I'm happy and it doesn't matter). Personally I don't think the problem has anything to do with your software. If it would be your computer would also act strange in other ways. The video would also first do odd and than after a while it would be black, not instant. When it's software it normally starts with something small (so an odd pixel) and then more and more is getting wrong until it shuts off. That's what I believe should happen when it's software. So tell your mother she's ignorant :) and that it's not firefox. The problem is probably in your hardware. And that's gonna cost you money. It might be the video card/chipset. But when those are broke they mostly show odd images, and your screen wouldn't look normal, not off. So I guess it's a power problem. That's there's something wrong in your laptop that divides the power and for some reason it stops giving your screen power. Best thing would be to hand it in to a recognized repair service or send it back to the manufacturer. If you bought the laptop less than a year ago then the manufacturer should repair the laptop for free. Maybe you have longer guarantee, or insurance. So check that first.

Well I've just got my electricity back on - it went off today at 3pm and came back on 11pm....
I did some housework until 4.30 when it started to get dark - i watched U2 live in Milan on my laptop until the battery ran out - i spent the rest of the time feeling sorry for myself and answering phone calls....
I did fall asleep for around an hour and a half - couldn't be bothered to go for a drive - was loosing the will to live LOL - but ok now...
You could make some phone calls unless all your phones are cordless - i keep a corded one for this reason - it's only a few weeks ago since our last power cut..
It's a pain - but it won't last forever.
Good luck

will if you have any family relative. like children or siblings. well just talk a scary stories with them and that should like the time other wise just go to bed because you can't see anything in the dark and you will be giving your body pains by hitting stuffs around you at night.

I turn on the radio and listen to music or call friends. If it's late, I just go to bed early.
