There is an interactive book that is sold in the baby section at Walmart, when you turn the pages it has a high pitched voice tell the riddle on that page. There are also some buttons and such that when they are pressed they will make neat noises to go along with the story. Both of my kids love it and so when ever I need a present for a baby, I buy this. Also, babies love those toys that vibrate and giggle at the same time.

I being the mother of a 7 month old would love for her to get gift cards! I can buy her what she really needs when she needs it. Sometimes people get you what you don't like (even if they think you might not like it). Diapers are only a good idea if you know what brand they use. You can also get her something personalized my daughter was given a beautiful snow globe with her name engraved on it, I love it! A great gift would also be a gift certificate for portraits )JcPenny, Sears, Walmart, etc). Pictures can get pricey!

Books
Sippy Cups (Stage 1)
Teethers
Toys (6 months and up)
Diapers

You could even get a gift card to Target so the mom can buy what she needs for the little girl, or a gift card to a place like Sears or JC Penney so she can get her pictures taken.

A learning toy? Or some baby monitors. Or maybe even room decoration for a baby.

Ooor a gift card to a portrait studio (like jcpenny) so she can have professional pics of her baby.

Books are always good too. My daughter loved Moo, Baa, La La La, by Sandra Boynton, at that age.

Maybe a vtech Move and Crawl ball?...I bought one for my 7 month old for Christmas (he'll be 8 months on Christmas). It's supposed to encourage crawling. It vibrates and randomly rolls on its own.
