I've tried a bit of soap with a wet cloth,and it doesn't seem to be working.

Use a banana peel or buy leather conditioner at a shoe store or places that sells fine leathers.

Try with a banana peel (use the opposite side of the skin), it helps to get rid of dirt. Afterwhich use a piece of clean cloth to wipe off.
