I just learned it in my history class. Here it goes...
It's about the Bubonic Plague. It took out 1/3 of the people in Europe years back.
"Ring around the roseie"...
In the disease, you would have rings around you. Especially around your pinkie. Which they used to call the roseie.
"Pocket full of posies"...
Posies are flowers (duh)...and the smell was to take away the smell of the dead (like a past lysol)
"Ashes, Ashes"...
When people died of this desease, they had to burn their body in stead of burying it so the desease wouldn't spread from the dead body.
And I think you can figure out the "We all fall down" part.
Now you'll think twice before you sing that...

Just to let everybody know, this isn't to 'get anybody down' or 'try to be a know it all' or anything like that. This is just some intresting stuff that I thought was intresting. Please don't be rude by saying something like, you already knew that. I mean, you can say it, but not in an 'you think you're all that, I know that too'. Ookee...enjoy!!!

Yeah those nursery rhymes are depressing and derogatory.
More examples:
Georgie Porgie - Based on adultery
London Bridge Is Falling Down - Viking War
Jack and Jill - Beheadings during the 'Reign of Terror'

I didn't know that...it is creepy, isn't it? And I didn't know there was anything like that about Rock a Bye Baby until I read it in the guy above's answer.
Ever read Grimms Faery Tales? You might also find those interesting...I did :o

Lots of kids' songs date from tragic events. "Little Sally Water" was a slave song. "Mary Had a Little Lamb" was about Mary Queen of Scots. Makes you think twice, but then again, it shows how much we've survived and it's pretty amazing that these kids songs have been passed along all these years, don't you think?

My brother learned this in school years ago and told me about it. It really freaked me out. His version was a bit different thought. From what I can remember at least.
But I think your version makes a lilttle bit more sense.
Isn't it scary that a song was made about it?

hahaha thats true, thats exactly where that rhyme came from. it is kinda creepy huh? I do remember that "ashes ashes" was because they used ashes from fireplaces to absorb the weeping open wounds or "ring around the rosy". The ring was a bluish, black, purple ring with a red, pinkish center like welts and those who were brave enough to care for the sick and dying used ash to soak up the pus from the wounds.

Tis true. A loy of our older nursery rhymes, and the like, had unexpected bachgrounds.
For example, The Hokey Cokey was originally the Church of England taking the pee out of the catholics and the whole genuflection thing.
Keep digging and there is some wierd stuff out there. ;-)
