Instead of the "devil walking Salem," John Proctor says, "vengeance is walking Salem." Explain how this is true. Examine the motivations for the witch hunts and examine the consequences that follow. Besides the deaths, what happended to the community and its, values, morals, way of life?

WOW i m so excited to answer your question!!!
I wrote a character analysis of John Proctor and i love the play. I'm a little rusty but I'll tell you all i can.

Alright, well vengeance is the motive of much of the happenings in Salem at the time of the trials.

Abigail wants to get revenge on Elizabeth because she is married to John ( to whom i assume you know she had an affair with). She is a very confused and interesting character, because even though she is most definetly the villian in this situation, everything she does is because of her love for John. She is really just a young girl who is deeply in love with this man who she feels loves her the same as she loves him. There is a certain niavity about her that almost makes you pity her.

Throughout the play there are examples of people accusing their neighbors of witchcraft to get revenge on them for some other thing that they have done to bother them. Because basicly once you are declared a witch it is all over for you. So the real "devil" of the situation is people condeming their neighbors to death by accusing them of witchcraft, which, ironicly, has to deal with communicating with the devil.

As for what happened to the community itself. The general economy of the community was devistated because so many people died and gave up there livlihood. Neighbors could no longer trust each other and much of the sense of community was lost.

I'm not really sure of the particulars of your assignment, but i would begin by introducing the crucible and then reviewing that you will be talking about the motives for the witchtrials and the effects afterward.

I wish that you had to write more about the individual characters because their are so many fasinating ones.

If you have any further questions do not hesitate to contact me. I would be happy to answere any further questions. You can also visit www.sparknotes.com it is a great site and will help alot. I was not fortunate to have the time to consult this source prior to answering this question, but i highly recommend the source.

Good Luck with your essay
Hope you enjoyed the play
