I have called my landlord and they will have someone over tomorrow. My question is what caused this?

Your back up is due to a clog in the drain. Since your bath tub will be lower than the toilet it will fill up first until it reaches the height of the water in the toilet bowl. If you only have one toilet then call your landlord back and tell them that you can not wait until tomorrow.

That is a health hazard and probably a health code violation to require you to continue to live in such a condition. Call your landlord again. Maybe he can put you up in a motel until the problem is fixed if he can't get a plumber immediately.

Could be the vent pipe is clogged. That's what caused mine to do that.
