PowerPoint is basically a slide show, so if you know word processing, just think of PowerPoint as almost the same, but instead of pages, think slides.

We use it at work on a big screen for new hire orientations, and client presentations, and on a laptop at trade shows. It supports a personal presentation that gives details; PowerPoint gives summarizations/visuals that support the personal presentation.

Storyboard your presentation first (that means sketch out on paper what you want to present in terms of specific text, slide by slide.) Be very brief on your slides; the detail and added verbage are for your NOTES only; your text should be summarizations, i.e., bullet points, and then you can also add graphics to support your points, images that include clip art, photographs, pie charts, etc.

After you have your presentation storyboard, to get started in PowerPoint, check out the DESIGN menu, background styles. Choose one for all your slides, to give the information a consistent presentation.

Then check out the LAYOUT menu for templates that you can use to layout your material (text and images). The program pretty much provides every possible combination for you to grab and use. Based on your storyboard, you can select the layouts that best fit your presentation. Type in your text, and link/import your graphics.

After you create your slides, or to review from time to time as you are working, go to SLIDE SHOW menu and run through what you've done so far. Now that you have your basic slide show, you can check out all kinds of fancier options for importing music, creating animations, etc.

You can then go to the NOTES menu and type in your verbal part of the presentation. Now you have everything right together: the info you show on your slides, and the verbal part.

Hope that helps.

It's really going to depend on what you want to do with your slideshow.

Start by opening Powerpoint (Start>Programs>Microsoft Office>Powerpoint).

From there, there are almost unlimited options. Are you going to use pictures? Will it all be text? Do you want a colored background? Do you want each page to be the same or different? Will you use animation? Do you want special effects when you transition from one slide to another?

Seriously, there are a lot of options. I'm open to answering questions by email, but will generally only have access while I'm at work.
