Panda. Nothing but Panda. Enterprise and on my personal desktop, it is probably the smallest memory footprint, and CERTAINLY the fastest scanner out there. I have never gotten a single virus, it automatically updates, as the signatures are released (even up to and including every 15 minutes, which I have actually seen during particularly virulent times) every personal license is authorized for up to 3 home computers, 3 year licenses available, 24 hour virus turnaround, spam filter included.
Stability. NEVER have I seen ANY BSOD referencing Panda, but NAV is rife with them. Panda's support is 24-7, too. REAL 24-7, pick up the phone and call. I've only had to call once for my Enterprise solution, and once for my desktop solution, but the results were instantaneous. Norton's support has sucked, in both availability as well as actual results, every time I've had to use it, and that's been many more times than twice.
NAV is an "industry standard" for the same reasons Windows is an "industry standard". They got their first, and introduced a product that filled a niche at the time, but there is better and faster available now. High quality? Possibly. "Very" high? Not likely. I'd rather have AVGFree than anything from Norton.

Let me see if I can help a little.
When Peter Norton owned and developed Norton Anti Virus it was in fact the premier of all Virus Software.
But, Symantec bought Peter Norton out and took over, things went downhill.
Symantec changed the software to be a resource hog and files and folders were scattered throughout, your system.
It is impossible to purge or UnInstall from your machine entirely without knowing a few tricks, or without some help.
The main thing that really makes Norton undesirable is when they scatter files and folders throughout the system, it affects several other programs and renders some useless.
No doubt some of the resources are very good, but you can't justify how good they are and how they preform when they render other softwares in your computer useless, in many cases. They are over priced and there are a few out there that are FREE and better.
You might want to do a little more Homework on your critique of there software.

In my spare time I am a Beta Tester for just about every antivirus an antispyware program in the world.
My personal opinion after testing Nortons, is pure garbage, hugh resource hog, fails to find the majority of viruses and if some are found, Nortons is unable to clean them.
I can only assume that you have never attempted to remove Nortons from your system. If you did you would not be saying how great Nortons is. When you go to your Add/Remove, you only think that you have removed Nortons from your system. You will find that Nortons leaves behind atleast 375 fragments of their file, glued to your registry, files and folders. You will play total hell trying to remove these fragments. Plus some of them are in your subsystem, (hidden). These fragments cause serious conflict with your system if not all removed.
The only thing that Nortons, is good at is excellent marketing skills.
I regret ever testing their software. (A learning experience I will never forget). Would not install Nortons ever again, if they gave me their software for free for life.
I run an antivirus program used by the Govt. Of China. Trojan Twister Antivirus. This program is light years ahead Nortons in technology. Never had one virus in ten plus years. Plus I only pay a one time fee of $29.99 for life that includes auto. daily updates and all new versions for life.

Even the free version, like Avast, will far out perform Nortons. And I could name a few more free versions that make Nortons look like the junk that it is.

Just read the reviews...
"Norton continues to be the bestselling antivirus program, and reviews say it's excellent at detecting viruses. However, users complain that Norton AntiVirus can slow your computer to a crawl, and that Norton conflicts with other software. Although reviewers say the 2007 version is improved, we still read many complaints about installation problems and crashes. No credible source ranks Norton AntiVirus as one of the top programs this year."
Kaspersky and NOD32 are very light on your system and detect malware better than Norton.

http://reviews.cnet.com/internet-security-and-firewall/norton-antivirus-2007/4505-3667_7-32069537-2.html is the page that rates them. They rate 3 on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being excellent.
And, from another source we get this:
The bad: Norton AntiVirus 2008 is roughly six times the size of most competing antivirus applications; doesn't offer three-user license; doesn't support Firefox; doesn't work with recent Yahoo and AOL IM applications (only old versions); offers fee-based services under the guise of technical support.
The bottom line: Norton AntiVirus 2008 didn't wow us this year. While the protection is solid, the user experience could be much, much better, and the product itself could be more streamlined. Also we can do without the addition of paid services in the technical support section.

all av. have have their faults but Norton 's main fault is end user Norton in the early stages of it's development allowed other programs to modify it such as legitimate TSR programs to combat viruses from using this loophole Norton insisted that you turn off your av when loading programs this pi**ed off users so Norton tried to reach a compromise analyzing new programs as they were being installed in many cases this failed or severely slowed down loading programs ....due to lack of space and time I'll make it short programs like Sim's that used programing parameters that verged on virus activity (adaptive programming or building algorithms caused Norton to freak out ) also spy-ware programs slip by Norton's defenses this undermines peoples confidence in the program. this is not symantec's fault!
some complaints are simply people not updating there definitions or not even installing the program properly.
users
misuse
spy-ware
hacked copies
poorly installed
not following the guidelines of the program

Norton takes up way too much active memory and it has deleted files that I did not want deleted and were needed to run a program.
So, I am over it. I cannot trust Norton any more.
