I am sceptical about recycling. I think a lot of recycling is resource negative; because of the energy required to recycle, and the use of resources (petroleum products, power, and especially water) in the recycling operation.
But it depends on the material. Aluminium for instance is very efficient to recycle, because of the large amounts of energy required to refine it from the ore. Concrete recycling, I'm not so sure about, because of the transport costs getting it to and from a recycling centre, and the energy used in recycling it (crushing, etc).
I think a lot of recycling operations only survive because of incentive schemes, etc.

The gas that it takes to pick it up and deliver it to be recycled. Also, i don't recycle because i have to pay to get it picked up where i live.

It can cost more to recycle than to throw some items away and make new ones.
