Actually salt doesn't melt snow it melts ICE if it is above freezing only, you need to use sand if it is below freezing, then that only helps traction until it warms up...

I do this. Go get some water softener salt. get a sprayer and fill it half way with the salt and then fuill it with water.
Let this mixture set a couple of weeks then when the weatherman says icy in the AM go out and spray the areas you do not want build up with the spray. this is a brine mixture and will assist in preventing ice buildup and thus warms up with more water and helps melt snow up to about 2"

You can sprinkle cheep Kitty-Litter onto the snow so that it gets frozen in with the ice so that it gives you something to Grip while you walk...

It won't melt the ice but it will keep you from slipping on it if you don't melt it.

salt is made to melt ice...a shovel is made to get rid of the snow before it melts and turns to ice...

Sometimes, we would use coal ash.

You need to know someone with a coal furnace.

This also helps stop the slipping.
