You should be alright to stay over. What I recommend is that you take just a light backpack on the flight then take the train from the airport into Madrid and spend the night enjoying the amazing night life.
You can take a train back in the morning and sleep it off during your next flight.

Few safety comments:
Do not take photos of any security devices or personnel in the airport. Your camera will be confiscated!!!!!
If you pack an alarm clock and a curling iron, keep them separated. Together, they look like an explosive device and your luggage will be searched, which could cause your trip to be delayed.

You can stay over night.
Check and find out if they have what are called day rooms.
They have them in Zurich and you can get a shower and a nap before you continue your trip.
