Remember the case a few years ago where the City of Berkely, in California, went to court to force the Boy Scouts to accept openly gay scout leaders? Surprise! The lead plaintiff in the case was charged yesterday with sexually molesting at least four of the boys in the Sea Scout program, over a several year period. The police have announced that a 'significant' number of additional charges will be added once some of the boys in the big stash of gay child porn they found in his computer have been identified.

"those Catholic priests surprised me more"

Really? Didn't surprise me at all.
"Help wanted. Must be unmarried, agree never to have sex with a woman, and must wear a skirt". And you're surprised that a lot of them are gay?

"Just b/c someone is gay doesn't mean they are a child molester"

Surf some gay websites sometime and then tell me there's no obsession with teenage boys among gay men. Then surf some straight porn websites and tell me there's no obsession with teenage girls among straight men. I wouldn't let my teenage daughters spend nights on a boat with a straight male adult looking after them, and nor should teenage boys be placed in the same position with a gay male adult.

To Barry...

There's nothin 'irrational' about it. Teenagers are at a very impressionable age, plus they are facing all the hormonal changes that go with being that age.

There's a HUGE difference between what you said - "They are missing out on the spice of life if you won't let them out of the house if another guy is there." and what *I* said - that I wouldn't let them spend nights on a small boat with a straight male. They have male soccer coaches, male teachers, they both date and go to parties - but a boat on San Francisco Bay is an inherantly romantic seting, and no, I would NOT allow them to be "looked after" in that setting by an adult male. The Girl Scouts do not allow girls to go camping or boating with (presumably straight) male leaders alone, and I think it's perfectly reasonable for the Boy Scouts to have the same rule with respect to gay male leaders.

To Sara... these were teenagers. He's a Sea Scout leader, and his victims are not "8 year olds", they are 14 - 16 year olds.

The guy was an idiot, if he forced his way past the Scouts policy of no gays, and then proceeded to prove the organization was right by being so stupid as to molest boys in the program. He ought to be jailed for terminal stupidity.

It is absolutely true that just because you are gay, you aren't necessarily a child molester. However, when you look at child molestration, about 1/3 of the molestations against young males are done by gay males. Which leaves 66% done by straight males and the very occasional female. However, when one considers that gay males only make up 4-10% of the population (depending on whose stats you go by), then that represents a greater chance that any one individual gay male is more likely to be a child molester than any one straight male.

There are obsessions with teenagers among straight or gay male or females...it is just the way it is.

You weren't talking about that....you were talking about a gay guy being a scout leader who molested children. Has nothing to do with teenagers. Someone can find a 18/19 yr old male/female sexy and that is not molesting a 8 yr old.
(and porn sites whether gay or straight need to have ppl 18 or older to be legal)

Yeah I am sure that guy hasn't been targeted by anti-gay hate groups since day 1.

I feel sorry for your daughters. They are missing out on the spice of life if you won't let them out of the house if another guy is there.

You can't keep them in forever, and I think your fears sound more like they are coming from something that worries you about yourself then what you know about the other parents in your neighborhood.

It is the kind of talk that is more from the "Senator Craig" school of rhetoric and parenting then from the "best way to raise well adjusted adults" school of parenting.

Not that that is personal towards you except that you expressed it here now - I see it in others too in my daily life - total distrust of each other, irrational identification of actual risks versus the benefits of various normal activities for kids.
