There are certain bands that even if you never heard one od their songs, you knew it had to be them because that band has such a distinct sound.

So what are some bands that have such a distinct sound (not just vocally) that there is no way you can mistake them for another band?

Boston and The Doors for me

Frank Zappa, he was one of a kind. Nobody sounded like Frank!
Also;

Rush
Neil Young
Black Sabbath (with Ozzy)
Judas Priest
Gentle Giant
Devo
Beach Boys
Iron Maiden
Captain Beefheart
The Who

I was thinking about naming bands like ELP, Yes, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, and Hendrix as well. But there were so many clone type bands back in the 60's and 70's, so I figured what's the point?

RUSH, completely distinctive sound.

But, yeah, Sarah, I would agree with The Doors, not only Jim's vocals, but Ray Manzarek 's keyboard style. Which really give them a distinct sound musically.

I could go on, a lot of bands with there own sound.
Zeppelin, Floyd, Tull, Yes, Steely Dan etc..
But, every time I hear that question Rush is always the first to come to mind.

The couple of really distinct bands that I've heard have been
Melt Banana
Hella
and Deerhoof

The funny thing about them though is at least the first two are very much small dosage bands for me. Deerhoof rocks though.
Also, I would put Radiohead up there too. Between Thom's distinct voice and the fact that they just keep doing stuff that seems to be just in front of the genre.
The Pixies in their time would be another one I would pick.

Les Savy Fav is another one that comes to mind. Those guys are a trip.

Beach Boys. Whether it's the 1960s or the 1990s, whether they suck or at their peak, you know it's them the instant you hear a song you don't know. While the vocals are their most distinct sound (with the vocal harmonies and all), you can tell by the guitar playing as well. It's basically a simple surf rock style.
