Good political question- many people think we already have a form of socialized medicine, since if you go to the hospital, they are supposed to treat you no matter what. If you can't afford it, we all end up paying through higher premiums and healthcare and taxes. And your credit will probably be ruined. Not really fair if it wasn't your fault- like a hit and run.
But if there were a healthcare program that allowed everyone to get checkups and other preventive care, then those who used it would generally be healthier and require less medical care. Especially for heart diseases and obesity-related things.
So yes, I think there should be at least minimal care for all- medicine should not be a luxury. But, for those with the money- the best doctors would probably be outside of the gov't plan and would be available.

Hi:
Free health care will minimize people going to the emergency room. So, that is mean that taxpayers pay less money. So, for those who said No, because of increased tax. Think a little deeper. Free health care is very important for every one.

People do deserve free healthcare. No matter what your political beliefs are, free health insurance benefits everyone. It helps capitalism because they would have more healthy people working for them, thus making more of the time they get paid for. As for other people who are concerned with their health, it would help them because free health insurance will help detect any disease and control it before it is too late. Free health insurance will make people live longer, work efficiently, and make the money flow!!! So basically it is a win-win situation.

No one in this country "deserves" a thing that they haven't earned. This is how it has always been until the last 25 years or so. If you want it, find a way to provide it for yourself. This entitlement crap really annoys people. Why should I have to pick up the tab for anyone else? Why are they exempt from self sufficiency? Excepting the disabled, take care of yourself. Don't look for it from me.

I have a friend who's single mother works two jobs. They live in a two-bedroom house with their grandfather. My friend is highly allergic to many things, suffers from asthma, has severe liver problems, and needs anti-depressants to function normally. Many of her problems (especially the liver) go untreated until they're dangerously affecting her, because her mother cannot afford healthcare. She uses athsma pumps, and is regularly reminded to only use them if it's "really really nescessary."
And she still has a little brother; he hasn't seen a doctor or dentist in years, not since his school physicals were required. He's relitively healthy, but if he were to have an accident the family would likely go bankrupt.
If nothing else, honest, working family's like these need health care for children.

There's no such thing as free health care. People in all other industrialized countries (except South Africa) have made a determination that the health of their citizens is important. Their universal health care is funded by taxes. Unfortunately, our country doesn't care about the 50 million Americans without health care.

Yes! However, I don't think the government should be giving it to the illegal aliens. They pay no taxes and they don't even belong here and all Bush cares about is the insurance companies making money and he just allows the illegals to come in and freeload off of us. We pay the taxes, not them, so we should be entitled to the free healthcare.

Yea....it has many good sides, the FDA will be forced to work for the common good rather than what they have been doing approving drugs on research done by drug companies, and food that allows 4 times as much pesticides, as the old standards, they will have a vested interest in promoting good health, to keep costs down, instead of bowing to corporate interests.

In my honest opinion, the ONLY people on the planet who should have free health care are people in the poorest of the poor developing nations of the world. In the United States I would say the elderly, and physically/mentally handicapped have a reason to have free healthcare. If you can work, you can pay for your healthcare, and I don't care if it's 10% of what you earn in your pocket, you pay for it. No free rides. No welfare.

Here is a different take, would you like waiting in line for an MRI scan for 3 weeks if you were dying, and be operated on with less than sterile equipment and poor operating procedures? most people don't understand how bad hospitals are in Canada, especially because they just hear "free health care, no more insurance to buy". we would have to pay taxes that cost just as much as insurance costs!
