Which one is best and why?

1) The 749 is rated like a 600cc 4cyl RACE bike.
2) The R1 is rated like a 1200cc Twin RACE bike.
3) These [ RACE ] bike are nothing alike.
4) These bikes can't RACE in the class.
5) Your question is not RACING based, hence in the wrong section.

I'd definitely take the R1 over the 749 any day...unless maybe you are racing on a low speed tight track like Summit Points Shenandoah. These bikes cost about the same amount, but the maintenance of the Ducati will be more expensive and the bike has a lot less performance. The Ducati 1098 would be competitive with the R1, but cost you $4K+ more. Plus you can't beat the reliability of a Japanese built motorcycle.
BTW, the 749 has been replaced by the 848 model which is about $1000 more then the R1.

Yamaha R1 is deffinately a better bike. It's faster, lighter, more powerful, more reliable, more comfortable, cheaper to buy, and MUCH, MUCH,(do I dare say it again? yep) MUCH cheaper to maintain. The only reason to buy the Ducati 749 is if you want something different from the normal and even then i would reccomend waiting for the new and much improved 848 to be released it's going be be far lighter, faster and cheaper to maintain. Still not as good all around as an R1 though not even the 1098 is as good as an R1.

R1 looks better and is obviouly more powerful. japanese bikes are #1
