England did not consider the colonist to be true British citizens, only subjects and a source of revenue thru taxes.

Here's a little-known example of how one small event can contribute to the founding of an entire nation:

George Washington requested a commission in the British Army and was denied, due to the fact that the English government thought the colonist were of lowly birth and not worthy of the honor to be in the British Army or occupy a seat in Parliment.
As a wealthy land owner, he felt that his (English) government had "snubbed" him.
This was one of the deciding factors which led to his siding with the rebellion.
"And the rest is history"!!!!

1763: Proclamation of 1763
1765: Stamp Act.
1770: Boston "Massacre"
1773: Boston Tea Party
1774: Intolerable Acts.

These should help you, research them and you'll discover how the colonists' attitudes changed from British patriotism (after the F & I War) to outright rebellion.
