We were assigned a paper at school about a classic director. A friend of mine REALLY loves Tim Burton, but wasn't allowed to do him because of his reliance on special effects. Does anyone know a director similar in style to him? I would prefer that they were not contemporary.

The reason we weren't allowed to do one on a special effects director was because we were going to do that later on in the year. :)

...singularly, I would be hard-pressed to identify a classic & seasoned director, bearing a singularly similar style to Burton...

...however, in combining varied stylish classic directors, in order to emulate a Tim Burton-type filmmaker, surprisingly and oddly enough, I would say William Castle (...for the mondo bizarro sense of humor, characters, stories and subplots...see "The Tingler", "13 Ghosts", "Mr. Sardonicus", etc.), Euro-director Mario Bava (...for the thick-as-pudding gothic style and attitude...see "Black Sunday", "Black Sabbath", "Baron Blood", etc.), and shlockmeister filmmaker Ed Wood, just for the sheer sense of eccentric filmmaking enthusiasm, which Tim Burton is quite well known for...

well i cant think of any directors that are similar to burtons style right now, but thats terrible that he wasnt allowed to do burton cause of the special effects. its extremely hard to direct a movie with special effects and anyone who doesnt think so doesnt know what theyre talking about. but i guess its what the teacher wants that matters : /
heres a long list of directors, maybe a name will jump out at you

Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise. I have Beauty And The Beast and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame. and the films feel like a Burton film because of the goth and the outsiders in them.

a classic wold be Akira Kurosawa. he's Japanese, and one of the best in history, he was some sort of guru to Spielberg and many other Hollywood directors..

i think you should go for him, i bet ur teacher/professor would salute him too:)
