Do you live near a lime quarry? That stuff gets into the water.

I assume you mean at the waterline, what has happened is you live in an area with "hard water" that is there is a lot of calcium and/or lime dissolved in the water, when the water evaporates it leaves the calcium behind as a residue eventually building up into an ugly deposit. there is a couple of things you can do , first and most expensive is a water softener which is installed between where your waterlines come into your house and the fixtures and it filters out the calcium/lime before it gets to your sink , spigot , or washing machine. secondly there is a product called"Lime away " that is commercially available in most hardware stores that will remove the deposits very well.

The Calcium was initially dissolved in the water as soluble Ca(OH)2. This reacted with CO2 in the air to make CaCO3 + H2O
