Eleven states seceded from the Union (officially the United States of America) to form the Confederacy (officially the Confederate States of America). Slavery was legal in all of those eleven states. Slavery was also legal in five other states that did not join the Confederacy. Those states -- Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, and West Virginia -- are known as the "border states." (Four of the border states already existed at the start of the Civil War. West Virginia was originally part of Virginia, but after Virginia seceded from the Union, West Virginia seceded from Virginia and joined the Union as a new state.)
For the names of the 11 states that made up the Confederacy, look up a good encyclopedia article on the Civil War or the Confederate States of America.

The border states were 5 slave states that aligned with the Union during the Civil War, instead of joining the Confederacy. They were Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri and West Virginia.
The Confederacy was the Southern slave states that banded together and attempted to leave the United Staes government and form their own country. These states were South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee.
The Union was the Northern free states that joined forces under President Lincoln to preserve the Union and not allow the seccession of the Southern states. They were the remaining 23 states of the United States.

properly, needless to say it replace into significant to maintain the unity of the country and for this reason crucial that the Union military win, yet once you somewhat learn the Civil conflict, there are actually not any cleancut solutions and maximum folk could be shocked at how lots the armies had in basic. whether the South had gained, they could no longer have supported themselves in an an increasing style of business international with their agrarian economic gadget. Slavery might have died out at last regardless of who gained. The conflict relatively wasn't approximately slavery, anyhow. maximum Northerners could have been pleased with purely reunification, slavery or no.

You don't want much, do you? In a few sentences . . . The confederate states were in the south and the union states were in the north. Slavery was rampant in the south. The north didn't want it.
