I finally got a good can opener by Black & Decker, the "extra tall can opener plus." It's tall enough to open any can, and easy to clean. I've had it for about six years now, and it's never given me any trouble at all.

Don't you just hate it when the electric can opener does not cut the top off and it just goes around and around and around without slicing it!! Or the can is too tall for the can opener and you have to hold it in the air to open the big cans???
With the new cans sometimes you can't open them by the bottom either!

I like the kind that opens the can just below the rim, instead of taking the top off and leaving that sharp edge, it takes the lid off, and leaves a smooth edge. You can put the lid back on if you want to. I can't think what the name for it is, I am kinda brain dead tonite, but I got it at Target. It's a manual type.

If you are looking for the manual type, make sure that it does have the big handles with the gripper pads on them.

If you are looking for the automatic type, I got the OneTouch for mom as she only has one hand that she can use. After her stroke, it left her paralyzed on the left side. You just put it on the can and press the button. It does the rest by it's self. It is battery powered. It opens any size of can as long as it is round.

I used to have an electric can opener, in fact more than one over the years. They ALL died. I went back to a manual and found one that was easy for me to use - even with limited use of my right hand...What I do is try them out in the store to see if handling them [pressing down etc] is too troublesome..

I know what you mean!!! I don't think a decent one exists, all cans should come with a pull ring, I find now though I don't seem to open many cans anymore, I've tried so hard to change my diet to fresh stuff because of Diabetes, but I do love canned tuna so I still have to struggle with those....sorry I can't help, hope someone else has found a good one to tell us about

If you want a manual one, we have an OXO Steel can opener that is pretty good. If you want an electric one, you might look into one by Black & Decker (I have some of their other electronic kitchen gadgets and haven't had any problems with them).

Never buy electric; they always go out of wack, get the one with the thick comfortable handles so you don't wreck your hands when you open things...
