It is a 2002 Golf and i just bought it. I though they were amaizing on gas, but not this one it will spend a whole gas tank in a week and i only drive it to school, school is like 5 minutes away. Our 8 cylinder jeep is more efficient on gas than this little 4 cylinder.

What can I do ?

First things, first. Is it a 2.0 liter engine without turbo, or a 1.8 engine with turbo???? Either way, are any of your check engine lights on? Either way, you should go to a genuine VW facility and have it checked out. It should get great mileage, but you didn't mention how many miles it has. Maybe a sensor is going out, or it needs a new O2 sensor. A good tuneing by someone who knows the product very well is the best answer. If a sensor keeps telling the operating computer that the engine is perpetually cold, for example, will waste lots of fuel. Having worked on these before, I know that they are a little touchy. To tune them, you must remover the intake manifold. When you change plugs, use Bosch platinum or iridium plugs, check for the proper operation of the distributor. These cars have a "learning" computer that adjust to the way that you drive and unfortunately must be reset with a proper VW scanning tool to work correctly. Once they are set properly, your gas mileage should be improved a lot!!

IF you really only drive it to school and back and nowhere else, assuming you go to school 5 days a week, and you say it is a 5 minute trip, which I will over estimate to be a 5 mile trip (it is probably a lot less), then you should only drive 50 miles per week. If you are using a whole tank of gas to go 50 miles then your car must have a leak somewhere in the fuel system, and this would be pretty obvious, e.g. stains on the ground under car, smell of gasoline...
So it sounds like you have a serious problem in your car, you should average at least 25miles per gallon so a tank of gas should last you over a month if it is just from school to back, and probably 2 weeks if you actually drive it anywhere else which I am assuming you do.
Bottom line, take it to a mechanic

Well if you do the work you can do regular maintenance to the vehicle like replace spark plugs air filter and fuel filter... also make sure your tires and tire pressure is ok.... the harder stuff is that you need to test your oxygen sensor and see if its responding slow or not at all... if you have any check engine lights on fix those as well.
