At the present time its a commonwealth country to the united states. In the past the people of Puerto Rico had a vote on the issue and it was overwelling turned down. Several times it was reported that they want nothing to do with becomeing a State of the U.S.

I wonder why you ask this question? But PR is a protectorate of the USA. It is also a major off shore haven for fortune 500 companies. I would just quess that as long as our laws or the fortune 500 want the laws to be as they are. PR will never become a state. These are just my ideas. Who knows the real reasons.

The way things stand now the Puerto Ricans have all the benefits of statehood and none of the responsibilities.

I think PR should be a US territory and not a state.

It is up to puerto ricans to decide that (and it has to be ratified by all 50 states as well I think). It is already a territory so what's the difference? It may as well become a state in my opinion....

No, the national language of PR is Spanish, and unless they are willing to make English their national language, they should not be made a state. We have more than enough people in this country now who can't speak English. We should allow PR to become a free country. No more imperialism!

Hmmm...no! I like the states we have already, but thanks. Why can they not be their own country? I don't dislike Puerto Rico, but that would not be a good idea to make it part of the USA.

actually, way back when the reason that it was not allowed to be a state (not what they claim) was that it would change our crime stats way off the scale.

the area was crime ridden at the time, might still be, i don't know i don't keep up with it.

but if it is worse and it could be, that will be a huge thing to deal with the state rights. for it would change insurance rates in america to pay out the claims there

Sure, why not, Hawaii is a state, and they have no use, why not Puerto Rico.

peurto rico has never applied for statehood before but they can at any time. so i don't think it's much of an issue until they begin a step in that direction.
