How many women had an episiotomy during birth #1, but avoided it and tearing during susequent births? I am pregnant with #2 and would LOVE to avoid the stitches this time around!

No midwives in Missouri, otherwise I'd get one.

I was very lucky. Both of my births never involved cutting, almost did with my last one but I saw the knife and yelled NO!!! then I begged them not to cut me and that I needed to focus on pushing the baby on my own. All the other mothers I know they have had it, they said it hurts like hell. I don't remember if I tear or not though but it sure hurt like hell when I was alleviating.

I did. Third degree episiotomy with my first. She was 8 pounds 6 ounces. My second was 9 pounds 3 ounes, no cut, only the tiniest tear that wasnt worth a stitch. My third was EVERYthing free-drug free adn episiotomy.

Episiotomy with #1 (it was a forcep delivery, so I was cut and tore as well...no getting around that one, I'm afraid - those things are huge)
Tore with #2...9 lb 6 oz monster.
#3...we'll see any day...I was due yesterday.

With #1 (baby was 7 pounds 3 ounces)I had a third degree tear...ouch!
With #2 (baby was 7 pounds 2 ounces) I had an episiotomy.
With #3 (baby was 7 pounds 11 ounces) I didn't have an episiotomy and I tore!
So...if l were you I would definitely get one. It is better to stitch a straight line than one that is ragged.

I had to get to pregnancy #3 before I avoided the stitches. But my first two babies had HUGE heads, and my third had a smaller one.

I did have it with my first, I wish that I had not. I also wish that I had not had an epidural.
My second one I had a really tiny tear that did not need stitches.
Its a good idea to do stretching of the perineum, you can ask your doctor or midwife who to do it. It does help.

If this is number 2 you may not need one depending. Most women don't need one the second time. Plus its better to heal a cut then a tear.

Had one with first pregnancy, baby was 8pds 11 ounces - boy, didn't need one with 2nd one, baby was 7 pds 8 ounces - girl. I was bruised though but midwife said I did not need stitching.
I hope this helps. Wishing you all the best!

I have heard that it's better to tear than to be cut. That way it's easier for the healing or something. Sounds kinda weird to me, wish I could just blink and be over with the labor part!

I had one the first time because of fetal distress. I had three more without needing it. I strongly recommend prenatal pernenial massage. You start it six weeks before your due date. It will stretch you in advance. It really helps. I wasn't even sore after my last one.
