The United States is the champion of Liberty, Communism is the enemy of Liberty. The United States is a model of the "age of enlightenment" philosophy, Communism is a model leading back to the darkness.

The problem with pure Communism and pure Capitalism is that it takes a leader with absolute power over the people to work for awhile but both systems cannot last. Americans seen back in the Boston Tea Party age that corporations over the people don`t work and Russia seen that pure Communism does not work in the long term. So we have America today with some social programs and some capitalism.

Communism leads to totalitarianism, which is just as bad as fascism. In the USSR and Red China millions of people were executed by the brutal dictators, Stalin and Mao, and millions more were put in prisons by the communist government. The USSR and Red China were as bad as the evil Nazi government of Germany.
They were actively trying to spread their filthy style of govt through intimidation, war, and by giving money to poor countries. Communism was defeated in the USSR and Europe, but it is active in South America and China.
See the movie, Dr. Zhivago, or read the book by Boris Pasternak to learn more about the violent Russian Revolution.

This view was primarily created by governmental officials and the media. The argument went like this:
The U.S.S.R. was our enemy. The U.S.S.R. was communist (although they never really got past socialist). Therefore, communism must be the enemy.
Essentially, since the U.S.S.R. was our enemy, the powers that be had to find a characteristic which would be different than the USA in order to focus the hatred. This is the exact same type of argument used by racists and bigots. Anyone who has done any research concerning communism knows that it is just another type of socioeconomic governmental structure.

Communism is one of those things that theoretically sounds good on paper, but in reality is a nightmare. It just doesn't work. Look at all how terrible life was for most in the USSR, and how few freedoms and rights everyday people had. It might work for robots, but it doesn't work with people... who have wants, ambitions, feelings, dreams, personal beliefs, etc.

Go read up on McCarthyism... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McCarthyism
The fervor got started there. The basic tenets of communism are counter to the capitalist system here in the US.
Here is a political piece capitalists like to use as an example of why that system is best.

Because a centralized government with no checks and balances leads to extreme corruption where citizens are murdered and robbed. The US citizenry is being pushed into a communist system against their will as the Constitution and Bill of Rights continue to be eroded.

To Answer your question;
Communism was tried in America by Robert Owen in a little town New Harmony in Indiana in the years 1825-1827.
It failed, the common explanation given by critics of these early communist experiments is that they failed to reward "personal initiative" and the "rugged individualism".
Those who fail to study history are doomed to repeat its failures.
