Jarhead comes from the combination of their haircut and the way their head looks when wrapped in that high collar jacket. Someone concluded that their head in that jacket looked like it had been in a jar.

It is only derogatory when spoken to be derogatory by someone who isn't one. US Marines may call each other all manner of things that the rest of us had better not repeat.

It's due to the flat top type haircut that they all have. It's derogatory, to some extent, but is used mostly only by navy personnel. Since Marines dislike Navy, they call them Squids and state "Squids are the lowest form of Marine life." I'm sure you get the quip.

It can be seen in two ways really...

One way it isnt derogatory- Its just a nickname like Tommy's (British soldiers) and Jerry's (German soldiers) in WWI.

In another sense- 'Jarhead' can be interpreted to mean kinda the 'dumb muscle' but I think it depends on the individual. As for where it comes from Im afraid I cant help you there.
