My almost 4 month old has been taking a big sleeping period of 5 hours at first, then goes to 4 hours for the rest of the night for over a month now (she eats every 3 hours or so during the day). She had a viral cold a few weeks ago, and every since then (she is over it now) she has been waking up every 3 hours at night again. Last night I tried to just give her a pacifier thinking that maybe she wasn't really hungry, but she was because I couldn't calm her any other way. Does this mean she is ready for cereal? (She has her 4month appoint. next week so I'll ask him then, but I wanted the opinion of some moms.)

To those of you shouting at me, I have done research and I have talked to many other moms about this. I know that some doctors recommend to start between 4-6 months. I know my doctor doesn't recommend before 6 months. I really just wanted the opinion of some moms.

A doctor will tell you not to feed your 4 mth old cereal because that is what they are supposed to say every baby is different I am a proud parent of 2 and I come from a family of 11 and everyone of us were eating cereal at that age. If you tell your Dr he or she will not approve but you will be able to tell if it is working for your baby my daughter was eating baby rice cereal mixed with formula when she was 2 mths old but my son didn't start eating it until he was almost 5mths I hope I helped good luck and having solid food in your belly does help you sleep and in my opinion you should not put it in a bottled you should spoon feed and as far as health my children are very healthy they visit the Dr once a year for check ups they rarely even get stuffed up noses they are the perfect size for there ages 5 and 6 and could not ask for anything better

I wouldnt personally...here in the UK it's not recomended until at leat 6 months or 5 for a very hungry baby...it can cause allergies and damage the lining of the stomach...as for putting it in a bottle that is seriously a no-no here...they call it "force feeding" a bit full on I know to describe it as that...but no doc here would ever recomend doing that...it can have consequences later on in life for the baby.

She might be going through a growth spurt and just needs to eat more. Sometimes babies get what they call an intruder feeding and it will last for a few weeks. They are usually ravenous during this. We started solid food when my son was a little over 4 months.

Most pediatricians don't recommend cereal until the baby is 6 months old. It is an old wife's tale that cereal will help the baby sleep. If she is hungry then all she needs is breast milk or formula.

GOD NO!!!!!!!!! Why would you DO THAT????
Please don't mess around with your child's future health. Listen to to experts and NO SOLIDS BEFORE 6 MONTHS. Regardless of size of baby, appetite of baby, gestation at birth, ability of baby.......I've heard all these bandied about.
6 Months is the absolute earliest recommended by EVERY HEALTH AUTHORITY IN THE WORLD.
If I seem like I'm shouting, why don't you try searching for questions before asking, you'd have found two hundred identical queries and not wasted your points.

My doctor told me not to even consider cereal until my baby was six months old. Yours may be going through a growth spurt and needing to eat more often.

Yeah that would be fine. I always give my daughter cereal in her bottle before bed and she sleeps from 9:30 to about 6:30. My Dr. recommended doing that.

I gave my son cereal at 3 1/2 months...his tongue thrust reflex was still quite strong. Best way to find out if she's ready is to try it. See how she takes it.
