We've just discovered that our baby that's 17 mo. is allergic to peanuts. We found out after I gave him a little peanut butter on a bread he barely had any and all the sudden he started itching and swelling up, then had difficulty breathing, we immediatelly called 911 took him to ER, we have an epi-pen for him now, but what else can we do to prevent the reactions, we removed everything that had any peanut ing in it from the house, but now what? Do we tell everyone we go to not to put anything out on the table with peanuts, or would that be rude, or what? Shopping takes long too, since we want to make sure that whatever we buy was not made next to peanuts etc. We're going to see a allergist next week, our first appt what should I expect there?

Do you have a Whole Foods Market in your area. It is an organic store that has groceries, herbal supplements, etc. My brother in law and his wife shop there all the time because she has corn allergies, and a lot of stuff has corn syrup in it. I would mention that she has severe peanut allergies so when they know you will be there they let you know if something has nuts (Most likely if she is allergic to peanuts she is allergic to other nuts as well), and they can keep anything with nuts up and out of her reach. Let teachers know when she starts pre-school, so when parents bring in snacks they know not to bring in things with nuts. I know a guy that has fraternal twins. One is allergic to all nuts (Except almonds), eggs and has asthma, and his brother has no allergies. They still have items in the house with peanuts, but he keeps them locked up so he doesn't get a hold of them.
Also when eating out ask if they use peanut oil to fry their foods. Some places use this kind.

Nut allergies are SO dangerous, so in no way would you be out of line to inform anyone you meet who will have food for your baby. I'm sorry, how scary that must have been!!
If he's not allergic to all nuts, just peanuts, try almond butter on bread for him. I'm sure at the appt they'll do a scratch test to figure out all allergies, just in case.
Anytime you all eat out, make sure you ask about any peanut oils in the foods. Many restaurants are getting on the ball and listing possible allergens on the menu. Or if not, the chef will always know.
Good luck. I'm glad your son is ok.

Also get him the medic alert bracelet.

Not wrong to tell caretakers and family that he's allergic to peanuts. My MIL's school has removed everything with peanuts in it from the menus because so many kids are allergic to peanuts.

Well, my daughter is allergic to milk, eggs, peanuts, rice, oats among other things, so feel lucky! Try to go to a health food store and read EVERY label carefully! Know that it is do-able. At our 1st allergist appointment, unfortunately they had to do blood work, which is horrible for any baby.

If you are taking him places make sure that nothing he's eating was made with peanut oil or any thing containing peanuts...and NO, it wouldn't be rude to tell people not to use peanuts...just tell them that he's highly allergic.
