You cannot buy arms without gold (you might lose). Unless you can suck in another country in, that has some. That is called an allie.

Much of the gold went into making military electronics, avionics, and parts of components for other military hardware. Some of it went to finance certain portions of trade for other strategic products and commodities with other countries that had those commodities.

Practically all the silver went to OakRidge National Laboratory to make (very low resistance) magnetic coils for machines used to refine Uranium for the Manhattan project.

This doesn't even make much in the way of sense...

Yes, the Pope did have a role in the Holocaust, but it was not solely for that reason. Hitler did hate the Jews, plain and simple.

The gold did not vanish from Fort Knox, its still there, we just don't use it to back our currency.
