Hello,
I'll agree with the check disk, but I think it's more basic than that. Make sure you first turn off everything running in the taskbar and in the background. Also turn off any type of screen saver you may have set to pop up after a certain amount of time. Anything that accesses the hard drive during the defrag, will stop it from running. I hope that helps.
Thanks,
Rob

It could be that the hard drive has either a partial or even a complete virus on it still. This could be causing the problem. Or it could be that part of the hard drive surface may be damaged and the hard drive can't get to it. Before doing another defragmentation, do a disk scan cleanup. If this doesn't help, you may need to look at the virus issue as well as a new hard drive. Also, run a complete anti-virus scan. Another thing could be that you were using the computer whilst the computer was attempting to defragment. That DOES cause the defragmenting to stop IF you're using too much of the computers' memory resources or even more than one program while defragmenting.

A volume must have at least 15% free space for Disk Defragmenter to completely and adequately defragment it. Disk Defragmenter uses this space as a sorting area for file fragments. If a volume has less than 15% free space, Disk Defragmenter will only partially defragment it. To increase the free space on a volume, delete unneeded files or move them to another disk.

It could be stuck on a file that isn't thier. Cancel it, and then do a Disk Cleanup. To do this:
Double-click My Computer.
Click the drive to which you are installing the software.
Right-click the drive to which you are installing the software (usually, this is C: drive) and select Properties
Click Disk Cleanup in the Properties dialog. The Disk Cleanup dialog opens and your drive is scanned.
After you drive has been scanned, a dialog for the drive you are scanning opens.
On the Disk Cleanup tab, select the items you want to remove from your hard drive. Usually, Downloaded Program Files, Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin, and Temporary Files. To view the files that will be deleted, click View Files. If you want to keep a file, create a folder and drag and drop the file you want to keep into it.
Click OK to start cleanup.
Optionally, you can clean unused Windows components and installed programs using the More Options tab of the Disk Cleanup dialog. For more information, search the Windows Help by selecting Start > Help or double-clicking My Computer and selecting Help > Help Topics. Search for Disk Cleanup, Windows Components, or Add/Remove Programs.
Then you can retry the defrag

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com
It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.
