Younger than was legal. We lived in a very rural area, so anytime other cars weren't out, my dad would take me out to practice driving. I did my first 55 mph trip when I was 11, my dad and I just switched seats before we got into town. He was a very patient teacher. Except for when he panicked once and yelled "You don't swerve for snakes!":

yes we didnt have to have car insurince think god ,,,, i think i took out every ones mail box on my street the first day .along with a few trash cans
