I almost never message him (although I used to, but he made it clear he did not want to date again and was kind of rude), so I pretty much stopped making any effort.
So what's the deal? Is it possible he wants a good friendship (he has plenty of friends already)? Is he being controlling, or is he just annoyed that I don't pay very much attention to him or flirt anymore?
It was a pretty short initial relationship but it was sexual. What's going on here?

That's the problem, I pretty much do want him back. But I don't want to a 'backup' or just around to make him feel like he can have me if he decides he does.

He misses the sex and wants to open up that door again. Since he was so rude tell him to get lost and leave you alone.

Don't be a doormat!!!!!

It's just texting therefore it's a TEXTUAL relationship now.

If and only if the relationship did not end on a bitter note, I think you should just limit contact with him to that level.

For now I say, limit the connection to text messaging. If he calls, don't pick up, and answer back with a text. Keep him in your network but be at a safe distance such that he won't pose as a potential threat and or problem to anything else you hold dear in your world. I say keep him around because you might need him for an emergency and or he might hook you up with opportunities that could possibly lead you to success and happiness.

Another thing, I hope you got free text with your phone plan. If you don't, don't work to hard at text messaging him back.

Personally, I wouldn't. Even if it was an ex girlfriend. If it's over then let it be over, you may have to draw the line and tell him not to cross it.

Unless you want him back, why do you care what's going on? Just don't answer him and he'll stop.
