Heat uses energy, either from fuel oil or using electricity from coal fired power plants.

Burning fossil fuels pollutes the air.

To add on the the answer above me, using lots of heat in the winter combusts fossil fuels, releasing carbon and nitrogen into the air.
Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere breaks down and absorbs the long wave radiation that the earth re-emits after it has been warmed by the sun, trapping it. This causes the earth to heat up- the so-called "greenhouse effect".
Also, carbon dioxide gets exchanged from the atmosphere into the ocean, where it causes chemical reactions that make the ocean more acidic. This leads to problems for corals and all kinds of other organisms, which build their shells out of calcium carbonate. In acidic waters, it is a lot harder to build your shells/skeletons/etc.

HEAT REQUIRES ENERGY WHETHER FROM DIRECT BURNING OF COAL OR OIL OR BY THE GENERATION OF ELECTRICITY BY THE SAME BURNING OF FOSSIL FUELS. IN TURN THIS DEPOSITS CO2 INTO THE ATMOSPHERE WHICH CAUSES A RISE IN THE OVERALL EARTH TEMPERATURE, AND ACID RAIN AND OTHER THINGS HARMFUL TO OUR ECOSYSTEM. IT IS HARMFUL.
