The largest headquarters for the slave trade (even at the time of the Civil War) was New York City. That was just the slave trade.

There were a number of people that were proponents of slavery. It would be rather hard to name them all.

Well, the first slave owners were Christians in the South, then in New York City, and Savannah, Georgia, the Jews became wealthy slave owners. Here is where it really interesting... some plantations in Louisiana were owned by multi-racial Blacks, other plantations along the Mississippi were aquired by Jews in gambling debts, and the city of Atlanta had the highest number of Jews in the South around 1860, with slaves working in their shops or homes!
