What does the phrase "motion to stay" mean in a divorce hearing? Does it mean that someone is trying to buy more time?

Thanks...

Can someone just file for a motion to stay if they want to prevent the divorce from happening? Do they have to have a legitimate excuse? Can it be done for personal reasons?

Yes, it does. It gives counsel time to respond to a judgment.

Yes, that is what it means, they want more time so are asking for the court date to be put back.
