80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.

To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

This question has been asked more than 34,000 times. When you typed in the question, you probably noticed the phrase "We have found similar questions" coming onto the screen in boldfaced black letters.

Why do you think that one more time around produce better answers than the last 34,000 times have?

I'm not trying to be snarky, but I do think that when I understand why people keep asking this as if they're the first one it's occurred to, I'll know the answer to this question.

life is meant for contrast. you can't see white on top of white. so you can't feel heaven without life.
in psalm 23:4 the valley of the shadow of death is mentioned. so picture two mountaintops, with the mountains shading the valley in the middle. the first mountaintop is before birth; the second is after death. the shadow of death is only there because we're down in that valley without the more encompassing perspective. we're walking though life towards death, and it's scary in the dark. it's uncomfortable. and it's unilluminated. it's all the opposite stuff of heaven.
but if we have enough faith in that light place from whence we came, and if we can hold that light; trust that it's what we truly are, and what we're going back to afterwards, that light in us can illuminate a path for others who are having trouble finding their way.
one thing: that light in us isn't from us; we are from it. we can't correctly illuminate others' paths if we think we can make up our own rules about the whole thing. you see, we may be eternal before our human lives, and after, but who we are inside of that valley is the opposite of eternal.
that eternal light inside of us should we choose to acknowledge it is the Holy Spirit of Jesus. Jesus is when God walked through the valley, so that nobody can accuse Him of the whole "do as i say not as i do" thing. Jesus is God becoming human to make a path for humans back to Himself.
okay. this ball of yarn is a little too big to unravel here on yahoo answers. i hope i haven't been snarky.
to sum up:
the light=holiness
the rule book=Holy Bible
if i can assume snarkiness is what it sounds like, snarks need not apply. for the rest of you, the harvest is here; the kingdom is near. positions are available. e-mail me; i'm here to help.

Meaning and purpose are really the same thing. It's just that we use the word "meaning" to refer to actions and we use the word "purpose" to refer to things/objects.

“Unless you assume a God, the question of life’s purpose is meaningless.” –Bertrand Russell

So if we reject God, we need to realize that we live a meaningless existence and we can't do anything about it.

If we don't reject God, then "how can I find God" is a far more important question than "what is the meaning of life" because to find God answers all questions.

I don't think life has any particular meaning. Nothing is defined. There is no truth or fiction. No right or wrong. Life is chaotic as it is structured.

The good news is that each individual gets to decide that for themselves. Generally speaking though, we are here to help each other.
