Read the compass like a clock:

N=12:00
NE=1 to 2
E=3
SE=4 to 5
S=6
SW=7 to 8
W=9
NW=10 to 11

I do it like this: With the north pointing away from you, read across it the word WOE (West-o-East), the o being the centre of the pointer.

South is pointing at you, SE is halfway between S and E, SW halfway between S and W, and so on.

Or, do it by the clock face method, which puts NE
at 1.30, SE at 4.30, SW at 7.30 and NW at 10.30.

Now all you have to learn are NNE, SW by S and all points in between!

Most compasses are marked accordingly.
