Did you receive paychecks? You may in fact receive W-2s for both jobs.

At $7000 of income, HOH and 1 dependent, you won't owe any income tax anyway.

Did they at least take social security and medicare out of the $3500 job?

With income of $8000, you aren't going to owe any income tax. But if they didn't take social security and medicare out at the second job, you'll owe around $500 for that - it's called self-employment tax. But you are most likely eligible for an Earned Income Credit of over $2700 so that will more than pay for the self-emplolyment tax and you won't owe overall, but will still get a refund of probably around $2200.

Ignore gasguy69 - following his advice will just get you in trouble with the IRS.

See if you can find a VITA site in your area - you can get your tax return done there at no charge. To find a site go to irs.gov and type VITA into the search box. The sites aren't finalized yet, so they aren't there yet now.

Since you have only $8000 in income and two exemptions (yourself and the son), and two exemptions plus the standard deduction is more than $8000, you will not owe income tax.

If the second job was as an independent contractor (as opposed to an employee), then you will owe self-employment tax of 15.3% of 92.35% of $3500.

If the second job was an employee, then you will not owe this tax, but they should have withheld social security, FICA and medicare, even if you did not make enough for income tax to be withheld.

The job that didn't take out tax deductions, requires that you file a 1099 tax form...for more information, you should consult a professional tax consultant.....
