This site has a lot of useful information, links to museums, sights and information:
http://www.amsterdam.info/
There are many museums that are fun to visit, like the handbag museum: http://www.amsterdam.info/museums/tassenmuseum/
A science center: http://www.amsterdam.info/museums/nemo/
A Pianola museum:
http://www.pianola.nl/ (Although it is having limited opening times now.)
There are several old houses redecorated as they used to be in the past, one of them having a church hidden:
http://www.museumamstelkring.nl/
Some others: Museum van Loon:
http://www.amsterdam.info/museums/van-loon/
Museum Willet Holthuysen:
http://www.amsterdam.info/museums/museum_willet-holthuysen/
You can also shop in Amsterdam, the center of town has many of the main brands and there are several areas with different special shops, this page is pretty good:
http://www.amsterdam.info/shopping/
Just wandering around in Amsterdam is nice too, there are busy and quiet streets.
For sightseeing, canal tours are good, or you can join one of the many bike tours.
And of course, the popular things are popular with a reason. If you have read the Anne Frank book you will want to see the house:
http://www.annefrank.org/content.asp?pid=1&lid=1&setlanguage=2 It might be worth it to buy your tickets on-line and get in without having to wait in a line.
Same for van Gogh museum:

Enjoy your stay.

Well the most things to visit are already mentioned above, however I didn't read anything about renting a bicycle which is one of the best ways to travel in Holland.
Also see de Jordaan area, with a lot of cafe's restaurants and nice shops.
You can also vist the red light district (just for watching, strange experience and best to do in the evening with just the two adults, depands on the age of the teenager) take a canal cruise and watch the different types of old architecture and visit some great and or strange museums mentioned above.
have a pleasent stay.

I think the best would be to rent bikes and go on a bike tour.
Canal tour is also great.
Heineken Experience was ok, nothing really educational, they didnt show exactly how they make it. This is just a museum not the actual factory itself.
Anne Frank House is def something to do.
Van Gogh museum, if you are into that.
Flower markets are amazing there.
Shop.

only FYI - Joure is rather a approaches from Amsterdam, approximately 75miles or only decrease than a million a million/2 hourschronic so which you may nicely be taking day visits to Amsterdam except you intend on reserving a inn interior the city. Amsterdam is an extremely risk-free - don't get the gossip approximately drugs make you think of in any different case. i'm initially from the U. S. and have been residing right here in Amsterdam for 15 years - i think far greater secure right here than interior the U. S.. There are just some severe crimes - maximum crime right that's petty, alongside with %. pocketing. yet once you're conscious of your assets and stay in lit factors, you're only high-quality. fairly. No concerns. shops in Amsterdam are not in many circumstances open late, aside from Thursday evening - that's a procuring evening. shops are in many circumstances open till 9pm on that evening. in any different case, maximum places to save close between 530-6pm. some exceptions are the Bijenkorf - a huge Amsterdam branch save on the edge of critical Station. This save is open til 7pm on a on a regular basis foundation and til 9pm on Thursday/Friday. it is likewise open on Sundays - which isn't undemanding interior the Netherlands. with connection with sightseeing - there is plenty to work out. an excellent element to do is to pass on the canal excursion. i comprehend numerous human beings think of it is hokey besides the undeniable fact that that's somewhat superb to work out the city from the view of a ship - provides a centred visitor a different attitude. there are dissimilar different museums, the main undemanding to pass to are the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk (present day paintings). some human beings desire to work out the Anne Frank domicile yet my opinion is that it isn't any longer worth it. A walk interior the Jordan - an old area interior the middle - is often relaxing as is an hour spent on the Waterlooplein flea industry. in case you sense helpful, you may as nicely hire a motorcycle and motorcycle around city - it is sensible, undemanding and lot of relaxing. motorcycles have specific paths and that they are an extremely undemanding mode of transport in A'dam. in any different case, there is numerous public transport (usually trams) that connect the city and gets you very nearly everywhere. savour your travels!

Rijksmuseum
Van Gogh Museum
Anne Frank House
The Melkweg (Milky Way), though I'm not sure of the age restriction
The grownups might wish to go out on the edge and visit the Museum of Torture; pretty freaky
The flower market
Improv shows by TVA or Boom Chicago
I recommend taking the boat canal tour. It travels around the whole city, and you may see things you'd like to visit later.
