I think the Mario Brothers are the most recognisable characters, even for people who have never played a Mario game. The only one more recognised is Pac-Man, but I wouldn't call it a franchise.

u got a pretty good line up right there. I love nintendo so I would put metroid in third place. ummm lets c. how about mario kart??? it has a pretty good fanchise. pokemon is doing really good too. Nintendo rules!!!
