The easiest way to tell is to look at your tune-up decal under the hood. If it indicates that you need valve adjustments, then it is not hydraulic. If it is hydraulic, you should periodically de-sludge the engine to make sure that the valve lifters are totally clean and follow up with a good synthetic oil to prevent premature sludging. Also, make sure that your PCV valve is clean and in good working order. Older Vtec engines need their valves adjusted, later models do not. It depends on the year the car was manufactured. No. Cams hit the rocker arms directly. That's why you have to do periodic lash adjustments.
