I thought this was a forum where we ask legitimate questions seeking intelligent answers. Sort of a "think tank" for resolving or answering questions.
I not only see people asking bias political questions trying to make a statement not seek an answer. They often do not chose the "correct" answer but one that supports their personal bias. One selected a "best answer" that had no TU and ten TD. It's only virtue was it supported the questioners bias.
I gave an answer which was almost a duplicate of the poster next to me......He got a TU......I got a TD....? are we evaluating the information or the person???
A questioner could not refute my information.....or allow the truth to be told.....so he blocked my access.... obviously he was not interested in the "answer" but in only his opinion.

My question.....what are we here for?

Moonlight Lady.....Agree with you.....I do not let it bother me......I just think the purpose of this valuable site is eroded by us allowing abuses. Maybe if Yahoo truly wants to provide a service.....they would allow a feedback program where members can protest flagrant abuses as ......say two people working together to boost each others ratings by selecting each other as BA......no matter what.... this is not a violation of the rules but an abuse of the system and site purpose

Leander.....some things are a matter of opinion.......others are not..... when 50 people say the person is wrong.....provide researched answers filled with facts......only to have the BA given to someone who just says "You are right"...... the purpose of this forum is corrupted

Rodejette..... I am pretty much here for the same reasons you are.....and I do not expect perfection.....but
There are people.....young people asking important questions about sex.....disease.....morals.....
Don't we have an obligation to perfect a system where we can come as close to perfection as possible?

2007-12-06 08:04:07 · update #3

Agua Dulce.... I appreciate.....what I hope was a compliment..... I try to select the BA ......not the one that pleases me but one that fits the question.....even if I do not like it myself.... I feel my obligation is to the "others"......not just to myself or my personal bias
There was a question about drug abuse....I have my personal point of view.....but instead of promoting it.....I presented facts......I let facts speak......I let truth lead the way

Hamster.....an intelligent nd logical analysis.....but it overlooks the greater obligation not to trivialize, delude or mislead those that are depending on us for help
A young girl was talking about giving up her virginity to her boyfriend of the moment..... I am sure she has no clue about the risks she is taking......it is easy to make fun of it but she is about to change her entire life. She wont be able to undo what she does......it is important not underestimate our impact

JIMBOY.... I do take it seriously when people use this source to make life altering decisions..... in philosophy or to some degree politics......not much harm can be done......politicians do not listen to the people anyway.....but when people ask about drugs.....sex..... relationships......some of these things can mess up your entire life.....do we not have the responsibility to help other get the RIGHT information.....isn't "ANSWERS" by it's very title an implication that you can get the correct information here? The forum should be constructed.... not just to stroke egos....or a place to play childish games...... but somewhere where people can get real help.....good advise......BTW no nation has a monopoly on stupidity..... I have a Filipino brother-in-law who still thinks withdrawl is "safe sex"....

Sir Kojak, please forgive us for adding to your confusion. Not all of us are in the same wavelength as you, brain-wise. My choice of BA has always been what appeals to me - right or wrong. I expect and respect the same from other askers.

I honestly believe that Y!A didn't create this forum for 100% seriousness and therefore perfection is unattainable. While most of us may try to give correct answers, I'm afraid there will always be those who won't even bother. Maybe they are in here for the points or whatever else. The only thing we can do is use this forum according to our conscience but let's not (we should not!) expect everyone else to do the same! Peace!

I share your sentiment 100%.

It does get frustrating when BAs are selected on the basis of relationships, not on the merit of the answer. I have seen posts saying that selecting the BA is the exclusive prerogative of the asker, and to a certain extent, I can only agree. I have seen posts exposing BAs selected unintelligently. But such is the way some members have made this forum to be. We see it happen everyday, and I am not optimistic that this will go away.

To your question "What are we here for?" I say that members are here principally to share. It is just that members answer questions differently in their own styles. The matter of selecting the BAs, I do not really mind. The readers know the real best answers, even if the answer doesn't get the 10 points.

Actually, the BAs that do not deserve the points provide us all some comic relief. Don't they?

Cheer up!

i know exactly what you are saying, because in Malaysia section, same thing happens.

on the other hand, some of the questions truly do not have a correct answer, so askers choose whichever that is nice to the ear. when i ask questions, it annoys me sometimes that asker is not allowed to choose "no best answer" whereas voters are. in that case, i will just have to choose the next best thing

---
and with the TU and TD... there in Malaysia section, we have mass bullying running wild. TU and TD dont really show how good an answer is. and to make things worse, some users go the extent of creating multiple users just to td and report users that they dislike. i got a violation notice for giving the least harmless answers like - cheer up and have a wine.
so i will just have to second Jimboy - dont take things too seriously :)

Irrespective of what anyone thinks, the choosing of BA is solely up to the person asking the question.
Whether it actually is the BA -----------
The TD and TU phenomenon is, I think, a matter of personal choice.
The way I look at it is that if a person asks a serious question and expects help but then goes and chooses a stupid or irrelevant answer as BA then they do deserve the type of answers that they get.
I do agree with you that a serious question should be treated seriously and that the BA should reflect this.
Having said that I also feel that Yahoo is also here for fun, enjoyment and learning.

I am here to ask, discover and seek. Precisely what Yahoo Answers is encouraging me to do.

Now the BA is solely at the discretion of the asker, whether it is the right answer, the stupidest answer, the answer she/he agrees on, the "best" answer, the answer that contradicts, etc.etc..

The same as questions can be of anything related to Philippines or Philippine travel or Philippine culture. We can ask whatever we want provided we heed Yahoo's guidelines against insulting Q&As. A rhetorical question is there for a healthy discussion debate for us users. And lastly these "commercials/plug-ins" are what makes YAP exciting. I got this idea when I asked this 8 mos ago

To Black Sapphire..don't worry about the newbies, this has been going on even before I came. People come, they get confused, stayed a week or so and hang out, then get a feel of what's going on and finally identify who's who..Newbies will come to know how YAP works and become regulars..Life's like that.

if only i have the power to suggest to Yahoo, i want them to change or reformat the Y!A. we're talking about the biases like the way of asking questions and choosing the best answers. we are here looking for the reliability at the same time validity of the answers. what if there are jurors in a specific fields and that would be the role of the officials. it's just ok if others may give opinionated answers but the way the questioners choose the best answers . so, allow him to choose his best answer. then the officials/jurors will be the one to weigh personal biases, comment, rate his choosen answer and rate the way he chooses the answer. thus, other Y!A users will know what kind of questioner is he/she. is he/she reliable or biased. i think this one is too complicated. all we have to do is to give honest to goodness answers. i may say that Y!A is just for fun.

What are we here for?

You know what? PT should be able to give you Best Answer for this one. I remember he gave such a beautiful answer to same question, but I am too lazy to look for it now. It's like given in enumeration format, bulleted. The answer he gave was like listening to "Love Stronger Far Than We", a song that is like a gift to us Yappers from Aguadulce.

If I could paraphrase Abe Lincoln: PT's answer/ would be answer " have consecrated it far beyond my poor powers to add or to detract".

If he does not answer, I shall look for it and post it here for you.

What I may perhaps contribute is to pay tribute to the word "Chaos" which is similar to confusion, via excerpts from Wikepedia:

"In Ancient Greek cosmology, Chaos was the first thing to exist and the womb from which everything emerged.

Genesis refers to the earliest conditions of the Earth as "without form and void," a state similar to chaos."

Therefore, from this Chaos/Confusion, shall come Order and Sanity, in my humble opinion.

Cheers.

well, just like almost all of us here, maybe that questioner is just trying to express his thoughts about something. just like what you are doing now, partly trying to express your thoughts about subjective questioners.

some ask questions. Some do arguments dressed as a question.
some pick the logical right answers. some pick the answers that somehow agree.
people are complex.
What are we here for?
to ask question, either subjective or objective. it wasn't specified.

but being non-bias and open-minded will forever be noble.

------edit--------

wow you are so deep. if that girl would be open-minded then she might have lots of options to choose from, thus giving her a little soothe to her pressure. when that girl asks questions thats already personal, then its okay for her to pick subjectively the right answer with bias because it already involves her being and no longer the truth.

A right answer to one person does not necessarily mean that its the right answer to the other one. Unfortunately, the answers to the questions depends on the person accessing it. I know, its wrong but I guess that the best that we can do is to just always give our honest opinion. Anyways, unless its a specific location or number, a lot of answers here are also opinions.

everyone has different reasons for being here. mine is to ask questions that i need clarification on and to answer questions that could use my little klnowledge. beyond that, we have no control over other things --- like the TUs, the TDs, the answer being chosen as BA, etc., etc. the only thing within our control is the sanity of our questions and answers - our very own...that's all.

and yes, to report instances of gross violations of yahoo guidelines - the kind that are really offensive!!! and let's leave the petty stuff alone...some cases of chatting, they say. let's just have fun, okay folks?

What are we here for?

A nice and good question i read this morning after i read my violation email for posting concerning about how "intelligent" this TD givers. I am not freaking about this "YOU TD ME, I TD YOU", but my concern was on newcomers that COME who tried their luck on YAP and then GO after they are being rejected as if they don't belong in a community.

At least you notice some BIAS treatment here on Y!A. Even me, I have a hard time choosing for BEST ANSWER when all my contacts answers my questions. But of course, i have to choose the one who give me intelligent answer no matter how many TUs or TDs they got.

Some TDs givers too evaluate the person itself and the answer. Something like personal grudges or dislike to a person. Cause i noticed some question, most of them have all the same answers but mostly newbies got TDs. Are they implying open favoritism here?
