My daughter is testing the drying time of various colors of a particular brand of nail polish when mixed with other substances (she got the idea because oil paints, paints made by mixing pigments with oils, were originally created to slow the drying time so that the artist would have more freedom to move the paint around before it dried.)

Makeup and perfume companies hire chemical engineers. You could also do something on using organics in makeup, shampoos, etc vs synthesized ingredients.

Email Aveda and tell them what you are working on.
Ask them for help.
OR
Look in the phonebook for an aveda salon. Go in and talk to the manager and say exactly what you are doing, and that you want to learn why their products and natural products are superior.
