I just said that I would have to figure out my firm's billing rates and get back to him. He will call me back. What else can I say? I need some good ideas!

The person that wanted to meet me is a financial planner himself.

what is a great way to respond?

"No, thanks, and please don't call me again."

Anybody that cold-calls you out of the blue is the type of financial planner that makes money from selling you things. This type of planner almost always has an incentive to steer you to things that pay him well, rather than what's best for you. If he's mostly paid by insurance plan fees, he'll recommend you get a lot more life insurance; if he's mostly paid by an annuity company, that's what he'll recommend.

If you decide you really need a financial planner, first check with your company -- they may have made arrangements for free or subsidized advice from a fee-paid financial planner (one that puts your interests first). Otherwise check around locally for recommendations on a fee-paid planner.
