Most of the time, people tell you that they are going to commit suicide hoping that you give them a reason not to. It is usually a cry for help. Any mention of suicide should be taken seriously. If the friend becomes happy all of a sudden or begins to give away things, you should become very suspicious. I have worked with patients in a psychiatric setting, and the people that really want to commit suicide, usually don't tell anyone out of fear that they will stop them. Those who do want intervention tell someone.

It does not take a rocket scientist to answer this one, of course would intervene, if someone is threatening suicide, they have a problem even if they have no intention of going through with it. People who talk about suicide are asking for help of some kind, and as their friend you need to address it and do what you can. I would caution you though, only do what is in your power to do, like drive them to a Doctor, and giving emotional support, be careful about letting their problems destroy your life too. Professional help is always the best choice, let them do what they do best.

Absolutely. I'd listen to the person and let them know that you think they need to tell someone and also let them know this is one of those things you just *can't* keep secret. Regardless of what they say, I'd tell my parents so they could talk to his/her parents.
